Car Battery Installation: Tools and Parts

  • Wrenches
  • Battery cleaning solution
  • New battery
  • Wire brush
  • Pliers
  • Anti-corrosion spray
  • Thick rubber gloves

How to Disconnect a Car Battery

  1. Turn off the engine and ensure that the parking brake is activated. Pop the hood of your car, and locate the battery.
  2. Loosen the nut that connects the black (negative) cable to the battery, and then twist and pull the cable off. If stuck, do not attempt to use a screwdriver or another tool to pry it off, as this may damage the battery.
  3. Repeat step 2 to remove the red (positive) cable.
  4. Loosen and remove the battery hold-down clamps.
  5. The battery is now ready to be removed. Be very careful as you lift the battery out, as it will be heavy.
  6. Clean the battery tray and hold-down clamps as needed, using a battery cleaning product or a solution of baking soda and water.
  7. Use a wire brush with the same solution to also clean the battery cable connectors.

How to Install a Car Battery

  1. Place the new battery in the battery tray, and tighten the hold-down clamps.
  2. Spray anti-corrosion solution on the positive and negative terminals of the new battery to prevent corrosion and extend battery life.
  3. Attach the battery cables to the battery terminals, first connecting the red (positive) cable and then the black (negative cable).
  4. Check that all connections are secure.
  5. Start your car. If you have any issues turn to the service team at Victory Toyota of Canton.
